Fishing Clothing and Gear

Choosing the Right Fishing Equipment
By Jason R Taylor

Choosing the right fishing equipment to take with you on your trip requires a little thought and planning.

You need to consider several things including weather, water temperature, and the type of fishing you will be doing and the experience of the fisherman.

If you plan on fishing in a river or stream you should pay particular attention to the environment around the area you select. Will there be easy access to fishing on the banks or will you have to be standing in the stream or river in waders for the best opportunities to catch fish. Lake fishing will require you to consider the type of boat, size of motor and the launch points available for public access. You can fish lakes and ponds from the banks but make sure there will be adequate access both to the bank and the water at the location you will be fishing from. There is nothing worse than planning a day of fishing from the banks only to find out that the weeds are so thick that you cant get your line in the water.

Type of rod and reels to use. The selection of your rod and reel is going to strictly depend upon the type of fish you are in search of. You want to make sure the rod length; action and grips are appropriate for the size and strength of the fish you want to catch. Don't skimp by trying to use an ultra light rod and reel if you out on a lake that is known for its large bass or walleye, you'll only end up with broken lines and possibly a busted rod. Likewise you don't want to take heavy lake fishing gear to a small farm pond or stream where the fish are much smaller. There really isn't much fun hauling in a small blue gill or other pan fish on a 9-foot, 20lb rod and reel. You'll just raise your rod and jerk the fish right out of the water.

Keeping the fishing gear matching both the prey and the environment are key in having an enjoyable day of fishing.
