Addicting Video Games

Video Game Addictions
By Qu Bic

What makes these games so addictive? Many people believe that a parent can prevent youngsters from becoming addicted to too much TV or too many video games by establishing a pattern of selective viewing or by using video game material early in a child's life so that by the time a youngster gets to be an adolescent and there's very little surveillance or control, it's less likely to occur. Just think of computer games as one more component in a child's exploration of what's out there in society. Game publications and Web sites still mostly employ low-paid hobbyists who are easy targets of lavish marketing events that encourage inappropriate ties between game makers and game critics. Matthew Kelvin explains that "they are very compelling with increasing complexity, so a child becomes more facile, yet wants to know more and apply new skills.

But despite these signs, the print and online publications that cover video games often employ fans who unwittingly make poor ethical choices. Media literacy specialist, Dr.Professor Gabriel of Computer Science, feels video games, if not too violent, can "offer some real opportunities for puzzle solving, strategic and critical thinking". Starting with the simple Pong game three decades ago and evolving into lavishly drawn interactive epics, the scale of games and the size of their audience has grown exponentially, with sales in the billions of dollars and major multinational corporations clamoring for a piece of the action. Also aim for a balance in your child's life. The first print magazine covering video games electronic games was co-founded by Bill Kunkel in 19 Kunkel describes those early days we loved the games, we wanted to see more of them, we wanted to keep writing about them, but not want any addictions.

The video gaming industry has come a long way. As for addiction? But adds that it's important that video and computer games are played in moderation. Choose some that involve problem solving or good story lines. Dr. Klavee says parents should "provide a selection of activities, not just the ones that have the most action or are addictive. Then the parent has to intervene and limit the amount of time the youngster spends with the video game. While wanting to improve their game isn't a problem in itself, it becomes one if video games are "taking a youngster away too much from other activities," says Ungerleider. Not much has changed in the past 20 years. Finally, Ungerleider remind parents that "if a youngster becomes addicted to video games it can be a problem and the parent does need to intervene and provide attractive alternatives.
